FungIP: Democratizing Mycotechnology

MycoDAO is giving mushroom science back to the community with tokenized ownership of mycological breakthroughs.

FungIP 101 - FUNGIble & Non-FUNGIble

FungIP is MycoDAO’s game-changing system for decentralizing fungal innovation, ensuring that discoveries—whether a new mushroom species, a bioactive compound, or a breakthrough in mycelium materials—are transparently owned, licensed, and monetized.  FungIP utilizes a novel method of Bitcoin inscriptions for Decentralized Science and bridges two distinct DeSci tokenization models:  IP-NFTs (Intellectual Property Non-Fungible Tokens) and IPTs (Intellectual Property Tokens, Fungible). Each serves a different function within MycoDAO’s ecosystem, allowing for scalable investment, licensing, and scientific collaboration.

With IP-INSCRIPTIONS (Intellectual Property Ordinal Inscription, aka Bitcoin Artifacts), we inscribe fungal DNA, compound molecules, biological templates and research directly onto Bitcoin Inscriptions, creating immutable, on-chain records that track intellectual property from discovery to application. This was first done by Mycosoft, by inscribing 3 unique & important mushroom species DNA into Bitcoin. This was done by taking a special part of Fungal DNA that helps identify species called the ITS2 genetic marker, then compressing it, inscribing it and hashing it to verify the ownership and signer of that IP-Inscription. At MycoDAO we take this concept and evolve it further with Provenance Recursion, two unique features only found in Inscribing data into Bitcoin. We then automate it, monetize it and display it, using the Ord client on Bitcoin, services like indexors, explorers, exchanges and galleries such as ORD.io, MagicEden, OrdinalsBOT and wallets like Xverse, UniSatOrdinals Wallet & Phantom. MycoDAO is the first BioDAO to utilize Bitcoin, Ordinals and its ecosystem in this way, providing DeSci opportunites never before seen.

Meanwhile, IPTs (Intellectual Property Tokens) allow targeted investment in fungal research projects, using Solana tokens to fuel breakthroughs in bioremediation, biofabrication, and fungal-based medicines. By combining Bitcoin’s permanence with Solana’s speed and flexibility, FungIP builds a decentralized, unstoppable ecosystem for mycological IP—putting fungi in the hands of the people, not corporations.

What are
IP-Inscriptions?

IP-Inscriptions are a non-fungible (unique) digital asset representing ownership of a scientific discovery (eg. DNA sequences, bioactive compounds, new fungal applications). Each IIP-Inscription stores legal rights to IP assets while linking to data repositories and licensing contracts. IP-Inscriptions allow for licensing via Parent-Child inscriptions and recursive inscriptions, ensuring a complete pipeline from spore collection to lab research.

Example: A new species of Lion’s Mane mushroom is sequenced, and its ITS2 genetic marker is inscribed into an IP-INSCRIPTION on Bitcoin. The Inscription serves as an immutable proof of ownership and enables licensing to research institutions or biotech firms.

What are IP-Tokens?

IP-Tokens are tokenized intellectual property assets, designed to fund scientific discoveries, product innovations, and biotech spin-offs. Each IP-Token represents fractionalized ownership of a scientific breakthrough—such as a novel fungal strain, bioactive compound, or engineered biological material. These tokens store legal rights to IP assets, providing a transparent framework for licensing and monetization.

Example: The launch of Project Oyster, which deploys salt-tolerant Pleurotus diego for coastal bioremediation, can be funded through the $OYSTER IPT. This token allows stakeholders to invest specifically in the Oyster project, separate from the holistic MycoDAO ecosystem.

What are IP-NFTs?

IP-NFTs (Intellectual Property Non-Fungible Tokens) are digital assets on Ethereum that tokenize ownership of scientific discoveries, patents, or research datasets. These NFTs provide legal rights to intellectual property while linking to datasets, licensing agreements, and commercial applications. On Ethereum, platforms like Molecule and VitaDAO have pioneered IP-NFTs for biotech and pharmaceutical research, enabling decentralized funding, licensing, and monetization.

The high-speed, low-cost transactions of Solana present an opportunity to expand IP-NFTs beyond biotech into fields like materials science, environmental technology, and decentralized hardware innovation. By leveraging Solana’s composability and DeFi integrations, IP-NFTs can evolve into liquid, tradable assets that fund open science.

In conclusion

FungIP enables unprecedented decentralized ownership, investment, and commercialization of fungal discoveries. By developing IP-Inscriptions for permanent mycological data, leveraging IP-NFTs for unique scientific discoveries and IPTs for scalable funding models, MycoDAO establishes a novel framework for fungal innovation in biotechnology, environmental restoration, and decentralized governance. This system ensures that fungal discoveries, mycelium-based materials, and biotech innovations remain decentralized, transparent, and profitable, reinforcing MycoDAO's mission to democratize mycological research and funding.

The IP-Inscription development process

Intellectual Property (IP) Inscriptions for fungal DNA, compounds, and discoveries are created using Bitcoin inscriptions, leveraging advanced cryptographic techniques such as compression, hashing, and timestamping to ensure data immutability and protection. Bitcoin Inscriptions, particularly through parent-child and recursive inscription structures, allow detailed genomic data, biochemical pathways, and proprietary fungal research to be securely inscribed onto Bitcoin’s immutable blockchain.

This approach integrates various Bitcoin-native token standards, including TAP, BRC20, and Runes protocols, creating robust frameworks for tokenizing fungal IP rights. The cryptographic strength provided by hashing, timestamping, and data compression not only preserves the integrity and authenticity of fungal data but also ensures efficient use of blockchain resources, enabling decentralized and perpetual proof of discovery and authenticity.

When projects within MycoDAO require dedicated tokens to facilitate sub-project funding, tokens minted on the Solana blockchain offer rapid, cost-effective, and market-friendly solutions. Solana's speed and accessibility complement Bitcoin’s robust security and longevity, creating a hybrid ecosystem that satisfies both long-term archival needs and dynamic, community-driven economic activity. Researchers and community contributors benefit from Solana-based tokens for quick market interactions, incentives, and sub-project financing, while simultaneously securing their most critical intellectual property within Bitcoin inscriptions.

The synergistic use of both Bitcoin and Solana timechains & blockchains empowers MycoDAO to balance decentralized research and innovation with agile funding strategies, enhancing its global reach, community engagement, and scalability.

Discovery and Research

Researchers collect fungal samples and DNA is barcoded. Novel discoveries are uploaded to the database (fungal IP library).

Tokenization and Proof of Discovery

Upon novelty verification, Proof Of Invention (POI) by Molecule is used, A unique hash is generated using Ethereum wallet & address. These proofs are timestamped on the blockchain, then sent to the Mycorrhizae Protocol to ensure authenticity.

Community Governance and Funding

The community votes to fund further research or protect the IP. Additional studies, cultivation, and compound extraction are conducted with MycoDAO’s backing. After this step a unique IP-Inscription of the DNA, Compound, Biological Template or Other Data is carved into Bitcoin forever.

Commercialization and Treasury

If a proposal graduates to a product or company, a Solana based IP-Token is created to fund the new spinoff. MycoDAO systematically builds a strong treasury and portfolio with its native crypto assets, IP-Inscriptions, IP-NFTs & IP-Tokens as well as infrastructure resources for its operations.

A Future-Proof IP System

Using a combination of Ethereum, Bitcoin & Solana, at different stages of monetization and analysis, allows MycoDAO to compartmentalize IP, Tissue & Data in the most efficient, automated & transparent Intellectual Property system ever implimented. This is done for Fungi, but works for all science.
